This 3-day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour is one of the most popular private journeys linking Morocco’s two imperial cities. It offers an ideal way to experience a large part of the country’s south, including the magical Sahara Desert.

Your tour follows a different route between Fes and Marrakech, passing through numerous villages and changing landscapes. Along the way, you’ll stop in Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its clean streets and European-style architecture, and visit the nearby cedar forest, home to friendly Barbary macaque monkeys.

Continuing south, you’ll travel through varied scenery on your way to the Merzouga Desert. There, you’ll ride camels deep into the dunes to reach your luxury desert camp. Each guest enjoys a private tent equipped with comfortable beds, warm blankets for cool nights, and a private ensuite bathroom with a shower.

Tour Plan :

Day 1: Fes – Middle Atlas Mountains – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Your 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour begins with a drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its European-style architecture and exceptional cleanliness. In 2013, it was ranked the second cleanest city in the world. Its name comes from the Berber word for “caves,” and the area is especially known for its beautiful outdoor environment and cedar forests.

You then continue to the great cedar forest, home to the Barbary macaques, where you can watch these monkeys living freely in their natural habitat.

Next, you travel to Midelt, the last major town in the Middle Atlas. Midelt is famous for its apples and cool climate, and it serves as a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region. It’s also one of Morocco’s main mining hubs for various minerals. Here you stop for lunch.

In the afternoon, the journey continues through the impressive Ziz Valley, passing many small towns and oases. You’ll pause at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley for photos and a short rest.

From there, you head straight to the golden dunes of Merzouga, where camels will be waiting. Your camel guide will lead you into the heart of the desert to enjoy a spectacular sunset over the dunes. After sunset, you continue to your desert camp for dinner and an overnight stay under the stars.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Erfoud – Tinghir – Boumalne Dades

After witnessing a magical sunrise in the desert and enjoying breakfast at camp, your camel guide will take you back through the dunes to meet your driver and begin the second day of your journey.

You leave the desert and head toward Erfoud, a small town renowned for its fossil-rich stones and marble workshops. You’ll visit a local fossil and marble cooperative to see how these unique pieces are prepared. The population here is a mix of Berber and Arab communities.

The route continues through several traditional villages before reaching Tinghir, a charming Berber town surrounded by vast palm groves. Tinghir is located in the Todgha Valley, between the High Atlas and the Jbel Saghro mountains. It is known for its beautiful oasis scenery and proximity to the famous Todra Gorges. Along the way, you will stop at scenic viewpoints to enjoy and photograph the landscapes.

From Tinghir, you drive toward Boumalne Dades. The name “Boumalne” is believed to derive from “Bou l’Male,” meaning a place of trade, especially for livestock, while “Dades” comes from an old local legend about a nomad who settled in the area. You will explore the Dades Gorges, with their dramatic rock formations and winding roads, before heading to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay in Boumalne Dades.

Day 3: Boumalne Dades – Rose Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast at the hotel, you say farewell to Boumalne Dades and drive through the Rose Valley. Here you visit the town famous for its rose products, where locals celebrate the annual Rose Festival every April, producing rose water, oils, and cosmetics.

The journey then continues to Ouarzazate, often called the “city without noise” for its calm and peaceful atmosphere. In Ouarzazate and its surroundings, you visit some of the region’s main attractions, including film studios where many international movies and series have been shot.

You’ll also visit the famous Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. This fortified village has served as a backdrop for numerous films, such as:

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Gladiator (2000)
The Mummy (1999)
Sahara (2005)
Most residents now live in the newer town across the river, but a few families still inhabit the ancient ksar. You can also visit the nearby film studios to explore the sets and learn more about the cinematic history of the area.

After lunch and some rest in this remarkable region, you continue your journey across the High Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech, with several stops along the way for photos and panoramic views.

On arrival in Marrakech, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or riad, marking the end of your 3-day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour.
